[Jul-22-2004]: Wow. Peter Bowers passed away yesterday. He was the original Godfather of the Online Group - protected us and gave us our initial funding and held off the jerks that tried to kill it. The Online Group eventually became things like tvokids.com, tvo.org, TVO's email system, TVO Online.....etc. Many people have worked on the team, and many continue the initial work in all sorts of other places. Amazing what one person can be responsible for protecting. Bye Peter - you are a real role model.

[May-11-2004]: Well, today brings good news for us! My son, Connor, was diagnosed with amblyopia∞ around October. Essentially his brain had almost finished shutting off the nerves that control sight in his right eye, because he was so farsighted. The brain is so malleable at a young age, that his brain had just switched the thing off, and it apparently hard-wires around age 5.
We lucked out by gong for a routine eye exam.
If you know anyone who has a kid under 4, tell them to get the kid an eye exam.
We had no idea he was having ANY trouble at all -- his eyes tracked perfectly - no lazy eye thing at all. Anyway, we've been patching his eye aggressively - you cover up the good eye for 3 hours every day. We're further lucky to have such a calm, compliant kid, because my brother had this, and when we patched him, he basically threw a fit and cried himself to sleep. Tim says he basically cannot see out of the eye today. Connor, on the other hand....well, let me just say that his eye "turned back on", and now his prescription for that eye is only 3.75. We're still patching, but he can at least see, and it's now only 3 days per week. Prognosis is good in that he can drive legally, play sports, etc. He will most likely have to wear glasses forever (well, unless he goes Lasik), but he has stereo vision, which is a pretty cool thing when you research it, and more importantly when you DON'T have it.
Today, we picked out some cool new glasses for him. He's such a great kid, I cannot tell you. The first time I had to patch him, which essentially blinded him, because he saw almost nothing (dark - not even fuzzy), he asked me to help him type in his name on the computer because he could not see the keys. Kidspotters in LEGOLAND?!
Being a parent will be a little easier in LEGOLAND during this season, as the park is launching an electronic Kidspotter service in cooperation with the Tryg insurance company. Available for rent in the Information Office, a Kidspotter ensures that parents can always find their children whenever necessary. On entering the park, the wristband is placed on the child's arm. If parents lose sight of their child, they can send an SMS message to the Kidspotter system during their entire visit. They will then automatically receive a return message stating the name of the park area and the map coordinate of their child's position in the park. On their special Kidspotter map of the park, parents can easily see where to find their child. The Kidspotter kit consists of a small wristband with a tiny sender, plus a special Kidspotter map of the park.
